Voice of the Theatre -September

9/1/2009

Autumn has arrived here in Lakeport and the days are warm, the nights are cool and the sunsets are truly works of art. With that in mind, we are really getting excited about gearing up for a lively season at the Soper-Reese. The stage will be empty for a few weeks while we prepare for the start of a new semester of Mendocino College acting classes once again.

This year’s class will be Acting-Performance, taught by Carol Dobusch. As part of the course, the class will present a show at the beginning of December, produced by the Lake County Arts Council. Be sure to keep looking here for more details about dates and times. Hosting the Mendocino College classes is a perfect way to keep the theatrical arts alive in our community and we are grateful to be their venue of choice.

We are inviting everyone to join us for our big event, the annual fundraiser on October 3rd for the first time at the theatre. It is guaranteed to be a success based on the gracious efforts of the volunteers who have dedicated their time to it.

The Harvest Moon Dinner Dance will be a chance for us to show what can be done with our venue. The Soper-Reese will undergo a make over as a supper club for your dining and dancing pleasure. We will be serving appetizers on the new patio courtyard along Martin Street, while pouring local wines donated by our 7 sponsoring wineries. Dan Meyer will provide guitar music for everyone’s enjoyment during this portion of the evening.

Executive Chef Mark Linback from the Blue Wing Saloon & Café will be setting up his tent at the theatre to cater the three course dinner. Seating will be in the theatre itself and there will be a bar in the lobby serving drinks manned by the Early Lake Lions. There will be a silent and live auction, lead by Shaun Hornby, our local furniture restoration expert and musician. We have some wonderfully fun auction items donated by local merchants and services. These include a weekend stay at a Lake Tahoe cabin, one week stay at a two bedroom time-share condo, and even a sail on the San Francisco Bay.

Concluding the evening will be dancing to the music of the Mendocino Jazz Band, the dance band led by John Parkinson. This 20 piece big band has won numerous awards and will be playing all night long after dinner. Tickets are $100.00 for the entire package of dinner and dancing. If you just want to come and dance the night away, we will let you for $40.00. Get your tickets early for this always sold out event. To buy your tickets or get questions answered, call Nina Marino at 707-279-4082.
