Romeo and Juliet
I hope you had the opportunity to see the production of “Romeo and Juliet” at the
Soper-Reese Community Theatre. The very positive reviews of this production clearly
reflected the enthusiasm that was apparent in those presenting this Shakespeare drama to
Lake County. John Tomlinson’s directing highlighted his extensive theatrical training and
talent.
While the reviews mentioned the appropriate age casting that was present in this
production, what wasn’t said was how important to young aspiring actors’ early exposure
to real classical theatre can be in their artistic development. To be exposed to Shakespeare
at an early age can only bring depth to an actor’s repertoire. We have John and his new
production company, New Vintage Productions, to thank for bringing this to Lake County.
The resumes of our young actors will certainly be enhanced by this experience.
When John proposed this project to us, we knew that the audiences wouldn’t be
as large as those for a more contemporary production, but we felt it was worth the risk as
an investment in the future of theatre at the Soper-Reese. The word did get out and the
crowds increased. This was a learning opportunity for New Vintage Productions, for the
Soper-Reese, for those young actors, as well as the audience, who all went away with a
rich cultural experience right here in Lake County.
The theatre performed well, but as Xian Yeagan mentioned in his review, the
Soper-Reese isn’t perfect for theatre, with more work yet to do. With patience and the on-
going support of the community it will continue to improve.

Annual Fundraiser This Saturday
Don’t miss the Annual fundraiser, “Evening Under the Stars” which will be held
at the Taylor Observatory on August 20. This promises to be a unique and exciting event,
and one so important to our continued operation. Please mark your calendar and get your
tickets now.
In addition, a full slate of performances are being planned for this up-coming year
with additional musical performances, such as “Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings”
on September 9, the return of the very popular “Triskela Harp Trio” on October 22 and 23,
the Lake County Symphony’s Fall and Christmas concert and more theatre with LCTC’s
production of the “Odd Couple” in February. It’s going to be an exciting and very diverse
year at the Soper-Reese.
Don’t miss the second Tuesday Classic Movie Series and come out for the return
of Third Friday Live starting in September.

Finally we’ve upgraded our ticketing system to allow our patrons to
